Sudan News Agency "SUNA"

The Sudan News Agency "SUNA" is the official news agency of the Republic of Sudan, headquartered in Khartoum. Its establishment was decided on January 1, 1970 in a speech delivered by President Jaafar Nimeiri in the city of El Obeid on the occasion of Independence Day celebrations, and it was officially opened in May 1971 coinciding with the second anniversary of the May Revolution, while its first news bulletin was issued on September 21, 1970 in Arabic and English.

The Agency defines itself on its official website as an "independent professional press institution" committed to providing a news and media service covering social, economic and political life "with accuracy, balance and objectivity", and broadcasts its services in three languages: Arabic, English and French, directed to newspapers, ministries, embassies, international organizations and local and foreign media. Its first director was Abdel Karim Mahdi, then journalist Mustafa Amin took over its management until 1985, and during his period it developed from wireless broadcasting to satellites.

The Agency operates through a network of correspondents in regional capitals, and is a member of the Federation of Arab News Agencies (FANA) and the Union of News Agencies of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation Countries. The first law for the Agency was issued on November 19, 1973, and its status was later regularized with the Public Corporations Act by an establishment order approved by the Council of Ministers on February 11, 2007. Since the outbreak of war in April 2023 the Agency has been affected by it, as it was reported that one of its journalists was kidnapped from his home in June 2023 by the Rapid Support Forces, and he remains missing until April 2025.
