Sudanese Armed Forces

The Sudanese Armed Forces are the national military institution of the Republic of Sudan, tasked with protecting the country's sovereignty, territorial unity and national security, and consist of the Land Forces, the Naval Forces, the Air Forces and the Republican Guard, with its command headquarters in Khartoum.

Its roots go back to 1925, when the "Sudan Defence Force" was formed from Sudanese units under British leadership in the wake of the events of 1924, and a military academy was opened in Omdurman to train Sudanese officers, and its units participated in World War II in the East Africa Campaign and the Western Desert Campaign. Before that, between 1898 and 1925, Sudanese soldiers served in separate infantry battalions within the Egyptian Army under a voluntary recruitment system, then after the establishment of the Defence Force the "Sudanization" of leadership began gradually by opening officer and non-commissioned officer ranks to Sudanese. After Sudan's independence in 1956, the Sudanese National Army was established with its branches, starting with the Infantry Division then the Naval and Air Forces, and Major General Ahmed Mohamed Al-Jaali was in August 1954 the first national commander of the army. The name changed over the decades from "Sudanese Army" to "People's Armed Forces" until it settled on "Sudanese Armed Forces".

The institution's combat doctrine, according to its sources, is based on defending the homeland and preserving its sovereignty and national unity and a strict military discipline system, and it undertakes civilian tasks consisting of providing assistance during natural disasters and maintaining security in exceptional circumstances, and the age of military service is 18 years. Its units also participated in international peacekeeping missions under the umbrella of the United Nations, and in the October 1973 War within the Arab military effort, in addition to other external participations at regional junctures. The institution celebrates its annual day on August 14, and marked the 72nd anniversary of its founding in 2026.
