The Sudanese National Audit Chamber

The National Audit Chamber is the supervisory arm over public funds in Sudan, the supreme state institution for financial oversight. Its story began in 1920, when a financial audit section was created under the Financial Secretary during the Condominium rule, then it gained its independence in 1933 with the issuance of the country's first audit law, transforming from a government department into an independent oversight body operating under the Constitution and the National Audit Law.

The Chamber audits state revenues and expenditures in the federal government, state governments, and localities, in addition to public companies and institutions, banks, and government agencies. Its auditing is not limited to the traditional accounting aspect, but includes performance auditing and assessing the efficiency of public fund use, alongside audits of computerized systems, forensic auditing, and environmental auditing. The Auditor General raises his annual report to Parliament and delivers a statement before it on the state of public finances and recorded violations.

The Chamber operates from its headquarters in addition to 18 offices in the states, and the number of its employees reached about 1,167 according to its presentation before the International Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions (INTOSAI) in 2015. The Chamber is a member of INTOSAI — Sudan appears in the organization's lists under the name "National Audit Chamber" — and it also participates in African and Arab gatherings of oversight bodies.

Auditor General Salah El-Din Mohamed Osman revealed, in a press statement following his meeting with the Transitional Sovereignty Council Chairman in November 2025, that the Chamber had completed auditing the accounts of 398 government units and 18 banks in addition to a number of Sudanese embassies abroad, and that it participated in the 25th International Congress of INTOSAI held in Sharm El-Sheikh.
