Omdurman Islamic University
Omdurman Islamic University is a Sudanese public university based in the city of Omdurman in Khartoum State, and is considered one of the oldest higher-education institutions in the country. It began in 1912 under the name "the Scientific Institute in Omdurman", on the initiative of the Sharia judge Sheikh Abu Al-Qasim Ahmed Hashim, and the institute was the first private scientific institute in modern Sudan and the beginning of systematic religious education in it, adopting in its organization the Al-Azhar model, and teaching Arabic language, Islamic sciences and Sharia sciences.
The institute developed in the mid-1960s to become Omdurman Islamic University in 1965, and the university began with the faculties of Fundamentals of Religion, Sharia and Economics, then added theoretical faculties such as Education, Administrative Sciences and Arts, and with the early 1990s it expanded to applied faculties. Today the university includes, according to its published lists, the faculties of Medicine and Health Sciences, Engineering Sciences, Agriculture, Pharmacy, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Sharia and Law, Economics and Political Science, Media, Computing and Information Technology, Community Development, and Islamic Da'wa, in addition to the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
The university operates under the Islamic waqf system and the credit-hours and semesters system, and awards bachelor's and postgraduate degrees in its specializations. Study there is organized through university, faculty and specialization requirements, and its applied faculties combine theoretical study with practical training, while registration and the announcement of results take place through its electronic systems, and prominent Sudanese scholars and figures have graduated from the institute since its early years. Its campus, covering about 500 feddans, is located in Omdurman in two parts: the male students' section in Al-Fatihab and the female students' section in Al-Thawra. It is a member of the Association of Arab Universities and the Association of African Universities, and its official website is oiu.edu.sd.
