Sudan University of Science and Technology
Sudan University of Science and Technology is a Sudanese public university based in Khartoum, with its campuses and faculties spread across Khartoum State, and it is one of the largest institutions of technical and applied higher education in the country. Its roots go back to 1902, when the Khartoum Technical School and the School of Commerce were established, followed by the institutions that later became its components: the School of Radiology in 1932, the School of Arts in 1946, the Khartoum Technical Institute in 1950, the Shambat Agricultural Institute in 1954, and the Higher Vocational College of Commerce in 1962, in addition to the Institute of Music and Theatre and the Higher Institute of Physical Education for Teachers. In 1975, these institutes and technical institutions were brought together into a single entity known as the Institute of Technological Colleges, also known as Khartoum Polytechnic, becoming the largest institution for technical education in Sudan. In 1990, this entity was raised to a university under its current name, Sudan University of Science and Technology, and its institutes were transformed into university faculties. Today the university comprises more than twenty faculties in fields including engineering in its various branches, agriculture, veterinary medicine, forestry and rangelands, water and environmental engineering, petroleum engineering and technology, computer science and information technology, medical laboratory sciences, medical radiological sciences, science, education, business studies, languages, fine and applied arts, music and drama, communication sciences, and architecture and planning. The university awards bachelor's degrees and technical diplomas, and postgraduate qualifications from higher diplomas to master's degrees and doctorates, in addition to training and continuing studies programmes and some distance learning programmes. Its educational mission rests on combining theoretical knowledge with applied skill through laboratories and workshops, and on preparing technical and professional cadres for the labour market and community service. It is a member of the Association of African Universities, and it has scientific and cultural relations with educational institutions outside Sudan.
